10th October 2004 - CUP Round 1 - Home 12.00pm KO vs. Gorleston Rangers C Result - lost 5-1 Mutford's Cup run ended at the first hurdle as they were well beaten by a very good Gorleston Rangers side. The game started on a perfect morning for football at the Dell. Rangers enjoyed the better of the early exchanges creating several half chances before opening the scoring. A high ball was lost by the home sides defence in the Autumn sunshine and allowed Rangers to slot home neatly. A second soon followed from a throw in from Rangers right, again misjudged by Mutford defence allowing a easy chance from close range. At this point Mutford felt they could turn it around in the second period as they would enjoy the advantage of the breeze and slight slope. However, two further goals ended any chances of a revival, both of which came from corners from Rangers left. Both corners were almost identical and expertly delivered, and some good attacking forward play resulted in the comfortable 4-0 half time score. The wind and slope did indeed even the game somewhat with both sides working hard and producing some nice football. Rangers increased their further again from a corner that was turned in at the near post. Mutford got their consolation goal from a typical long range blaster from Jason. Paul Rose said after the game, "other than the result I really enjoyed the game. I'm glad that we didn't give up and avoided a cricket score. Sometimes you look at a team and think that one player made the difference, however I think Rangers edged us all over on the day. I think their goalkeeper looked very safe. We need to pick ourselves up and get three points in the league next week". Special thanks goes to Gary Woolerton who stepped in at the last minute and gave an excellent example of refereeing. Mutford return to League next week when they face Caister Roma at the Dell.
