25th August 2004 - Home 6.30pm KO vs. Parents Result - lost 5-2 In a well contested match the MUMS & DADS proved to have a bit too much experience for the lively and energetic LADS team. In a bright opening the LADS passed the ball well with Josh, Jordan P and Mikey looking very lively up front. Eventually Mikey found himself in the box, evaded two challenges and as the ball bounced up volleyed past the evergreen Jeff Litchfield in the adults goal. The adults immediately replied with some excellent football producing a cross from the right and a header from Paul Rose striking the bar. After further pressure from the adults a free kick was awarded by referee Piery, the defence was caught knapping allowing Dave Lambert to blast one, with the help of a deflection, past Harrison. This seemed to settle the M&D's nerves, and following a second strike against the bar by Rose, Mark Smith added a second after some good work by Nick Palmer down the right. The LADS continued to battle with Olly and Jordan W working hard in the centre of the field. Eventually a third was scored by the M&D's when Charlie curled one in from the edge of box. The LADS continued to pass the ball well with Josh forcing Litchfield into an excellent save, similar to Ray Clemence in the 70's for Liverpool. There then followed a worrying moment when Josh and Litchfield collided in full blooded challenge in the box, leaving the youngster poleaxed. Some excellent goalkeeping by Harrison kept the scores reasonable at the break, which couldn't come soon enough for many of the adults. The second half began with Smith going on a run, the ball appearing to be stuck to his foot by glue at times, before tucking the ball past Harrison into the corner of the goal. This spurred the LADS onto greater efforts and they then pushed the adults back for much of the second half. The back four of Brett, Jason, David and Brad S pushed up to the half way line denying the Adults much of the space they enjoyed in the first period. The wily John Smith then rolled back the years with a cool back pass only for Litchfield, in moment of madness, to pick the ball up, again like Ray Clemence in the 70's for Liverpool. From the resulting free kick Jordan P squared the ball to Josh who opened his account for the club with a well deserved goal. The LADS continued to press and Jack came close to further reducing the scores with a powerful shot against the bar. Further opportunities fell to Mikey and Jason but they were unable to finish. Eventually the game was finished by Mark Smith completing his hat trick. Working harder than ever before and determined to complete his hat trick, Smith latched onto a cross from the right to side foot home from very close range. An excellent game, well contested and producing some excellent performances by the LADS, particularly Harrison, David, Jordan W, Josh and Mikey. Many thanks to all those who took part in the game and especially to those who helped with the bar-b-que and refreshments. Posted 27th August 2004 |
