2007 Summer Tournament Update Main news for this summers tournaments is that there will be no Mutford Tournament. The Committee has decided that instead, we will put extra resources into next years (2008) tournament which will be the opening event at our new ground in Carlton Colville. Listed below are the dates of the tournament entered so far (subject to change) and a brief note on our progress.
5th May - Invitation Match Mutford v Byron FC. - 11-A-Side - Lost 3-0 Summer Tournaments kicked off with a friendly against Byron FC from Essex. Byron play in the Essex league and spent the weekend in North Suffolk playing friendly matches. It was a good game with the visitors winning 3-0.
Sat 12th May - Gorleston FC Tournament - 5-A-Side - Group Stages Mutford's 1st summer tournament was a bit frustrating, both teams played good football against all division 1 opponents and both teams more than held their own. The Mutford Gents were only beaten by one team and finished 3rd in a tournament where only the first 2 teams qualified for the semi-finals. It was a similar story for the Mutford Jocks, finishing 4th, which on another day would have been enough to secure a quarter final place, if there had been one.
Sun 10th June - Shrublands Tournament - 5-A-Side - Runners Up What a display from the Mutford Jocks in a tournament to remember, finishing Runners Up. Good group stage performances saw them through to the Quarter-finals unbeaten and missing out on top spot on goal difference. The team of Liam, Jason, Harley, Smiffy, Danny, Mikey and Josh (making his debut) beat Swindell in the Quarters 2-0 and despatched Shrublands Warriors with an impressive 3-0 victory in the Semi's. The final against the other Shrublands team was a nervy affair with Mutford taking the lead in the first half. Both teams hit the post in the second half and Mutford were defending their lead resolutely. But just when it looked like Mutford would be returning home with the silverware they were to be thwarted with virtually the last kick of the game. Almost 2 minutes of time added on had been played when the ball fell kindly to a Shrubs player who slotted home to take the game into extra time. This late blow seemed to knock the stuffing out of Mutford and a lapse in concentration allowed Shrubs to take the title scoring half way through the second period of extra time. Mutford Gents fielding Harrison, Sam, Josh, Joe, Charlie, Shaun and Ollie were unlucky not to qualify for the Quarter-finals slipping up in their last game.
Sat 14th July - Pakefield Tournament - 5-A-Side - Semi Finalists Mutford Jocks took their recent Shrublands form into the Pakefield Tournament and in a strong 16 team tournament made it through to the Semi-final. The squad consisting of Liam, Jason, Harley, Smiffy, Josh and Phil, played some excellent football against strong opposition including the winners and runners up from the top divisions in both the Norfolk and Suffolk League and the Norwich League. Mutford Gents were so close to making it to the quarter finals but were piped by a point finishing joint 5th with Shrublands. Some good performances from Ollie, Jonny, Sam, Shaun, Mikey and Joe had seen them beat Sprowston, the winners of the Norwich League and eventual finalists in the group stages.
