17th September 2006 - Home 10.30am KO vs. Waveney A Result - Mutford 16 Waveney A 0 Mutford fielded a strong side for this Preliminary Cup match in which Mikey bagged a double hatrick to help Mutford to a comfortable win against a Waveney side with a never-say-die attitude. It was the new boy wonder Sam (Samba) who grabbed the first goal with a composed finish in a 1-on-1 situation and a Mikey cracker made it 2 shortly after. Phil latched on to a Harley through-ball to make it 3 before Jonny and Joe both hit the "Wood-Work" (Mild Steel, actually). Harley then extended the lead with a fine shot, high to the 'keepers right. Jonny again went close but snatched his shot wide after a fine run down the right. Then again Jonny in the thick of it with a slide-rule pass to Phil, who made no mistake to put the home side 5 up. Sam and Danny then combined when Sam went close from a fine Danny cross. Then mutford were awarded a free kick in a dangerous position after Smiffy was brought down just outside the box. Jason hit a rocket of a shot that the Waveney 'keeper did well to save, but pushed the ball to Smiffy's who had followed up well to calmly slot home. Danny combined well with Josh, Josh slotting the ball into Danny's path only to be thwarted by an excellent save by the Waveney 'keeper. The half was rounded off with one of the best goals of the game, when Josh passed to Sam who passed to Danny who put Jordan to finish off an exquisite move. Sam then came close to his second when his shot was cleared off the line by a Waveney defender. Half time 7-0. Jonny came close early in the second half with a riffled shot that came crashing back off the crossbar. Danny made it 8-0 after Jordan had cleverly out-jumped the Waveney 'keeper and Danny followed up to tap the ball across the line. It was Danny again for the 9th with a smart goal. Danny then set Mikey up for his second of the game with a pinpoint cross that Mikey gratefully despatched to make it 10. Harley then played an excellent through-ball to Mikey whose first effort came back off the post to give him a second bite of the cherry and this time he made no mistake. Mikey then got his 4th of the match after reacting quickest to a loose ball. James notched the 13th after latching on to a good cross by Phil that the Waveney defence failed to clear. Again Harley was the provider as another through-ball was played inch perfect for Phil to score his 2nd of the game and Mutford's 14th. Jordan thought he'd scored after Phil had played him but his effort hit the bar. Mikey then rounded the game off with 2 more goals. One from a short goal kick and the next from some indecision in the Waveney defence, to make it 6 for the game. After the game Mark the Mutford Assistant Manager Said "It was one of those days when all the hard work that the boys have put in in pre-season paid off. The goal scorers will take the glory but the defenders were rock solid. Harrison in goal, Josh, Jason, Jack, Joe, Josh2, James (and anyone else whose name begins with 'J' were all out standing, and Robbie also did very well on his Debut". He also added "I have to say how impressed I was with the attitude of the Waveney players, even though they were on the wrong end of a high scoring game, they never let their heads drop. Well done boys, you are a credit to your manager and your club".
